Trump Threatens Strait of Hormuz Blockade Over Iran Deal
President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning, indicating that the United States could blockade the Strait of Hormuz if a final nuclear deal with Iran is not reached. The President made this statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, on the 20th (local time).
No Transit Fees During Initial Period
Trump clarified that during the initial 60-day truce period, there would be no transit fees imposed. He further elaborated, stating, “There will be no transit fees for the Strait of Hormuz during the 60-day truce period, and there will be no transit fees after 60 days.”
Potential for Blockade if Deal Collapses
However, the President added a significant caveat: “However, if the final deal is not reached, that is an exception.” He explained that the U.S. might impose transit fees to recover costs incurred, past, present, and future, for services provided to Middle Eastern nations as their protector.
Background of the Agreement
Previously, the United States and Iran had agreed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to immediately open the Strait of Hormuz for transit. As part of this agreement, Iran committed to not imposing transit fees for 60 days. However, concerns have been raised that Iran might begin levying these fees after the 60-day grace period expires.
Implications of Trump’s Statement
President Trump’s remarks appear to preempt these concerns, simultaneously signaling that if future negotiations falter, the U.S. could resort to imposing transit fees to recoup its security expenditures in the region.
