Nationwide Fire Safety Inspections Underway for Summer Season
Authorities are launching comprehensive, unannounced inspections of public facilities expected to see high visitor traffic during the summer vacation period. The focus will be on indoor recreational and lodging establishments, performance venues, and restaurants, areas where large crowds are common.
Rising Fire Risks During Summer Months
Recent data reveals that fires during the summer months account for approximately 15.5% of all fire incidents over the past five years (2021-2025). These summer fires are also associated with a higher fatality rate, representing 9.7% of all fire-related deaths. A significant number of these incidents originate from common household appliances, including air conditioners, fans, ventilation systems, washing machines, and kimchi refrigerators.
Inspection Scope and Schedule
From May 29th through July 31st, proactive inspections and administrative guidance will be implemented for facilities identified as having a higher risk of fire. Key areas of scrutiny will include:
- The presence and functionality of fire-fighting equipment and evacuation routes.
- Confirmation of illegal installations or modifications through logbook records.
- Proper management of electrical equipment, particularly refrigerators and cooling systems.
- Assessment of potential operational failures in fire-fighting systems due to pest infestations.
Official Call for Public Vigilance
An acting fire chief emphasized the critical nature of the summer season, noting that it presents not only extreme heat but also a surge in hidden fire hazards. The official urged the public to exercise heightened caution and remain vigilant during this period.
