Kiwoom Hero’s New Import Faces Early Struggles
The Kiwoom Heroes, who have been plagued by offensive woes, invested $500,000 to bring in Kester Hura, a former Major League Baseball player with a reputation for hitting 50 home runs. Hura’s initial powerful home run displays had sparked considerable anticipation, but concerns are now surfacing regarding a persistent weakness that was identified even during his time in the U.S. – an Achilles’ heel against high-velocity fastballs.
Alarming Strikeout Numbers Emerge
As of the game against the Doosan Bears on the 6th, Hura’s season statistics have been surprisingly modest, failing to live up to his extensive MLB experience. Across seven games, he has recorded six hits in 27 at-bats, resulting in a batting average of just .225. The most concerning statistic, however, is his strikeout rate. In 32 plate appearances, Hura has struck out a staggering 12 times, equating to a strikeout rate of 37.5%. This means he is striking out twice as often as he is getting hits.
Hura has recorded two strikeouts in each of his last four games, dating back to the SSG Landers game on the 3rd through the Doosan Bears game on the 6th. Including the KT Wiz game on the 31st where he struck out twice, he has registered multiple strikeouts in five out of his seven games played.
High Fastball Vulnerability Exposed
reports Hura’s time in the U.S. consistently pointed to a tendency to swing and miss at high-velocity pitches, a problem attributed to his unique uppercut swing. There is growing concern that KBO pitchers are exploiting this weakness by consistently throwing high fastballs.
This vulnerability was evident in the game on the 6th, where Hura swung and missed at four high fastballs from Doosan’s starting pitcher Choi Min-seok, reaching speeds of 143 km/h, during the third inning. In the game on the 5th, with the team trailing 3-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Seo Geon-chang led off with a single. With one out and runners on first, Hura came to bat. However, he swung and missed at a 147 km/h fastball from Doosan pitcher Park Chi-guk that was thrown high, missing a crucial opportunity.
Optimism Meets Reality
Initially, there was optimism in the U.S. that Hura could overcome his high-fastball struggles with raw power, given that the average velocity of KBO pitchers is lower than that of MLB pitchers. However, it appears KBO pitchers, even if not overpowering, are strategically targeting Hura’s upper-cut swing with precise control and meticulous pitch sequencing.
Kiwoom brought in Hura with the sole expectation of him being a power hitter to help the team escape their slump. If he continues to miss at high fastballs, the $500,000 import, who boasts MLB experience, risks being reduced to nothing more than a ‘strikeout machine’. All eyes are now on whether Hura can overcome this high-fastball deficiency and truly become the game-changer the team desperately needs.
