Samsung Lions’ foreign ace Eric Kline delivered a standout performance, securing his first victory of the season in a commanding 11-1 rout of the Kiwoom Heroes.
Impressive Pitching Lineup
On May 5 at Daegu Samsung Lions Park, Kline took the mound in the home matchup against Kiwoom Heroes. He fired six innings, allowing just four hits—including one home run—three walks, and seven strikeouts while surrendering only one run. This quality start plus effort marked the end of a six-start winless streak, providing a crucial boost to the Lions’ lineup.
Samsung capitalized on Kline’s strong outing, exploding for 11 runs to seal the decisive win. The pitcher credited his infielders, particularly the shortstop, for their exceptional defensive plays that preserved the low run total.
Regaining Form After Early Struggles
Despite a season-opening home run that tested his resolve, Kline completed the game effectively. Following a loss to SSG Landers on April 23, he strung together three consecutive quality starts, rebuilding his confidence on the mound.
“My teammates at shortstop handled crucial plays in deeper counts, turning potential threats into confidence-building moments,” Kline noted to the team.
Keys to the Turnaround
Kline attributed his resurgence to mechanical adjustments observed through video analysis. “Watching clips helped refine my mechanics, yielding positive results,” he explained. “Adapting to the league’s rhythm and leveraging those insights has paid off.”
He also highlighted weight management efforts amid a packed schedule, including straight pitching duties and WBC commitments. “Time was tight, so I focused on shedding pounds to maintain first-inning intensity without relaxation,” Kline said. “My current condition feels optimal.”
Up to the fifth inning, he had thrown 92 pitches but powered through the sixth, expressing determination to pitch deep. “Quality starts are vital for team success and create game-changing shifts,” he added confidently.
Standing Among KBO’s Elite
Active sluggers like LG’s Rooker, KIA’s Deil, and other KBO home run leaders share similar traits, yet Kline views such displays of power as rare. “It’s special to contribute amid all these strong hitters—I’m proud,” he remarked.
With Samsung’s overwhelming offense, Kline aims higher: “Strikeouts feel abundant here too. My efforts position me to become a key contributor to team victories.”
This marked Kline’s season debut win, underscoring his growing impact on the Lions’ rotation.
