Hanwha Eagles slugger Kang Baek-ho solidified his role as the team’s first baseman during spring training in Okinawa, Japan, on February 21. The powerhouse hitter demonstrated intense focus in extra batting sessions, drawing praise from management.
Manager Highlights Improved Swing Mechanics
Manager Kim Kyung-moon watched Kang’s practice swings alongside the Lotte Marines and approved of his progress. “We considered shifting him from first base to the outfield, but seeing his work ethic, he’s handling outside pitches without yanking them and locking down clutch hits,” Kim remarked. Kang has amassed 100 home runs over four seasons with Hanwha since signing as a free agent in 2022.
From KT Stardom to Hanwha Powerhouse
Kang burst onto the scene with KT Wiz in 2018, smashing 29 home runs as a rookie and leading the league in homers for three straight years. Despite a release after 95 games, he rebuilt his reputation as Hanwha’s premier slugger. This year marks his push for consistent offense amid high expectations.
By February 23, Kang sharpened his contact skills while pitchers honed corner-outside locations. He remains committed to first base, showing stability in relief duties during the World Baseball Classic team camp on the 21st.
Manager’s Bold Strategy and Confidence
“If Cha Eon-seong isn’t sharp, that’s the pitch to crush. Having me around helps. I’m the type to swing at anything subpar, even from stars. That’s my style—building confidence,” Kim explained. “Kang Baek-ho confidently eyes first base, and it shows.”
Roster Boost with Veteran Addition
Hanwha bolstered its lineup by signing veteran outfielder Son Ah-seop, the KBO’s all-time leader in at-bats at 2,618. The free-agent deal totaled 100 million won for one year. Though sidelined by a spring training injury, Son joined group sessions post-recovery.
Kim emphasized team growth: “Individual drills sharpen skills, but full participation drives strength. Pitchers rebound strong, and integrated practice elevates everyone.”
