Wind Turbine Collapse Sparks Safety Investigation
A massive wind turbine measuring 80 meters in height collapsed onto a roadway in Yeongdeok County, North Gyeongsang Province on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities confirmed no vehicles were passing through the area at the time, preventing potential casualties.
The incident occurred near the Changpo Wind Farm complex, where 24 similar turbines have operated since the facility’s completion in 2005. Eyewitnesses reported hearing loud cracking sounds before the structure crashed across the road.
Investigation Underway
Local officials stated preliminary assessments suggest weather conditions may have contributed to the structural failure. “Footage shows the turbine swaying abnormally before detachment,” a county representative explained. “We’re examining whether residual effects from recent typhoon systems weakened the infrastructure.”
Engineers and safety inspectors have cordoned off the area while conducting stability checks on adjacent turbines. The investigation will include analysis of maintenance records and structural components from the failed unit.
Safety Measures Implemented
Authorities have temporarily closed nearby roads as a precautionary measure. “We’re conducting thorough inspections of all wind farm infrastructure,” the county official added. “Public safety remains our top priority during this evaluation process.”
The region has significantly expanded wind energy production in recent years, with this incident marking the first major structural failure at the nearly two-decade-old facility.
