Legendary pitcher Park Chan-ho, famously known by his No. 61 jersey, stepped onto the mound once more at Daejeon Hanwha Life Eagles Park on March 28. Dressed in a black suit to pay tribute to the victims of a recent apartment fire tragedy, he delivered the ceremonial first pitch during the Hanwha Eagles’ season opener against the Kiwoom Heroes.
First Daejeon Appearance in 18 Years
This marked Park Chan-ho’s first time pitching in Daejeon since 2008, spanning 18 years. The Hanwha Eagles had previously selected him as their premier Korean starting pitcher, highlighting his status as a key asset.
Career Highlights and Comeback
After competing with Japan’s Orix Buffaloes in 2011, Park Chan-ho returned to Korea in 2012 to join the Hanwha Eagles. Over 23 games that season, he recorded 5 wins, 10 losses, and an ERA of 5.06. A notable moment from his tenure includes a start against the Nexen Heroes at Cheongju Sports Complex on a past afternoon, where he challenged batters with precise pitches.
Despite the formal mourning attire prompted by the Daejeon fire disaster, Park Chan-ho’s throw rivaled that of an active player. The ball left his hand with veteran precision, striking the catcher’s mitt squarely.
