A man in his late 50s has been convicted for failing to return misdelivered packages to his neighbors, resulting in theft charges.
Court Ruling on Package Theft
Chuncheon District Court’s Chief Judge Jeong Jong-geun announced on the 14th that Mr. A, aged 59, received a suspended prison sentence of one year and was fined 3 million won. The charges include embezzlement and theft.
Details of the Incidents
The conviction stems from two separate incidents. In October 2025, Mr. A took possession of a package mistakenly delivered to his Chuncheon residence. The contents, valued at approximately 200,000 won, were health supplements belonging to his neighbor, Mr. B. Instead of returning the package, Mr. A kept it.
Further complicating the case, in November of the same year, Mr. A also stole a package addressed to another neighbor, Mr. C. This package contained 4kg of dried yellowtail.
Judge’s Sentencing Rationale
Chief Judge Jeong stated, “The defendant repeatedly misappropriated or embezzled the property of others, and his culpability is not light.” The court considered several factors in its sentencing decision. These included the defendant’s acknowledgment of his actions, the absence of prior offenses of a similar nature, and the fact that he had compensated the victims and reached a satisfactory agreement with them, thereby mitigating the damages.
