Van Dijk Expresses Shock Over Arne Slot’s Exit from Liverpool
Virgil van Dijk, captain of Liverpool and the Netherlands national team, has revealed his surprise and disappointment regarding the recent managerial change at his club. The Dutch center-back stated that he was not consulted by the club’s hierarchy regarding the decision to part ways with manager Arne Slot. This comes as Slot himself has stepped down from his position after two years at the helm of the Merseyside club.
Surprise and Lack of Consultation
In a recent interview with Dutch broadcaster NOS, Van Dijk shared his feelings about the situation. “The news of the manager’s departure came as a surprise,” he admitted. “I’ve spoken with Arne Slot and Pepijn Lijnders, and I am grateful for everything they have done for me. I trust that Liverpool will navigate this situation well.”
Van Dijk further elaborated on his exclusion from the decision-making process. “I landed in Amsterdam on Saturday, and the news had already broken,” he explained. “I spoke with the club afterwards, but by then, the decision had already been made. The club did not seek my opinion before making the decision.”
Slot’s Tenure and Liverpool’s Season
Arne Slot, a Dutch compatriot of Van Dijk, took over as Liverpool’s manager in the summer of 2024, succeeding Jürgen Klopp. In his inaugural season, he led the team to the top of the Premier League standings. However, the club, having been defending champions, finished the 2025-2026 season in fifth place, narrowly securing qualification for the Champions League.
Following the conclusion of the season, Liverpool’s management made the decision to dismiss Slot. His contract still had one year remaining. The club is reportedly set to appoint former Benfica manager Rúben Amorim as Slot’s successor. An agreement is understood to have been reached, with an official announcement expected soon.
Van Dijk’s International Focus
Van Dijk is currently preparing for the upcoming World Cup finals with the Netherlands. The Dutch national team has been drawn into Group F, alongside Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia. The Netherlands recently suffered a 1-0 defeat in a friendly match against Algeria in Rotterdam.
