Big Bang’s Daesung candidly explained his decision to release music exclusively through the group throughout his 20-year career.
During a recent YouTube video on his channel “Jip Daesung,” titled “Comeback, Udol?,” Daesung conversed with former I.O.I members Jeon Somi, Choi Yujung, and Kim Sohye. The clip, featuring discussions on comebacks and past activity challenges, surpassed 10 million views shortly after release.
Past Collaboration Hurdles
Daesung recounted how I.O.I approached him for a featuring spot before their debut Asia tour. Despite intense demands in other areas, contractual restrictions prevented participation. “Even amid that insane busyness, group joint activities weren’t possible,” he stated. “I’ve only partaken in others’ successes without giving back.”
The former I.O.I members shared similar struggles. Jeon Somi responded, “It’s one group for me too.” Choi Yujung reflected, “With everyone gone, music releases became impossible despite my wishes.” Kim Sohye concurred, “True, music shows were out of reach.”
Industry Pressures Exposed
Jeon Somi detailed a tough award show moment: “A certain program silenced me properly, as it threatened music opportunities. Pressure overwhelmed me—I went numb. That was at age 16.”
This prompted Daesung to address historical industry norms. “Such a culture prevailed then—like an unspoken contract,” he noted. “Favor-based variety appearances unlocked music show slots in that system.”
“Big Bang avoids that path, sticking to group releases,” Daesung added. “Lacking personal drive for solo pursuits kept me from it.”
Upcoming Global Tour
Big Bang gears up for an August world tour, connecting with fans worldwide two decades post-debut.
