Former Daegu Mayor Mun Hee-gap has taken on key roles in People Power Party candidate Chu Kyung-ho’s campaign for the 2026 Daegu mayoral race. He will serve as sponsor committee chair and honorary supreme election committee chair.
This alliance follows a competitive nomination process where Mun and Chu vied for the party’s endorsement. Sources close to the campaign view the move as a major strategic gain.
Campaign Official Highlights Impact
A Chu campaign spokesperson noted on May 1 that Mun’s involvement alongside top election strategist Myeong Ye-seon represents a “robust reinforcement for securing victory in the local elections.”
Mun previously held positions as presidential economic chief of staff and Daegu’s inaugural civilian-elected mayor. Officials credit his administration with tackling entrenched urban challenges through ambitious green projects like Dosim Sanrim urban forestry, which aimed to boost resident incomes and quality of life via business expansion and poverty alleviation.
Chu Praises Mun’s Expertise
Chu Kyung-ho expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Appointing former Mayor Mun to open Daegu’s future wings as sponsor chair and honorary supreme election chair is an infinite honor and priceless opportunity.”
He continued, “Trusting in Mun’s proven administrative insight and economic acumen, the team commits to triumph and revitalizing Daegu’s economy.”
The partnership underscores consolidating support within the People Power Party ahead of the June 3 elections, potentially shifting dynamics in the Daegu mayor race.
