A key accounting staffer at Busan City Council faces a four-year prison sentence after authorities uncovered an elaborate embezzlement scheme involving nearly 957 million won in public funds.
Embezzlement Scheme Unraveled
Investigators from Yeonje Police Station, led by Chief Kim Hyun-soon, secured the conviction against the suspect, identified only as A, a man in his 20s. He exploited his position to siphon off the massive sum through 101 fraudulent transactions between February and October last year. The scheme targeted payments to a non-regular contract worker, disguised as legitimate expenses.
A also misused cash for purchasing official seals and contract documents. Surveillance caught him dumping large quantities of illicit stickers at a Samsung Market waste site, further compounding the charges.
Spending Spree on Games and Streams
The bulk of the stolen funds fueled A’s lavish spending on internet broadcasts and online gaming platforms. He diverted an office-purchased computer for personal use and even traveled abroad, evading oversight.
Police Statement on Severity
Officials emphasized the gravity of the crimes, stating, “The damage inflicted on the victim remains unreturned, causing ongoing suffering from the crime’s aftereffects.” They added, “Factors including the duration and frequency of offenses, embezzlement scale, and post-crime cover-up efforts justify a stern penalty without leniency.”
The case highlights vulnerabilities in public financial oversight, with 20 related violations leading to the decisive four-year term.
