Pitcher Reflects on Record-Breaking Season in Korea
Cody Ponce, the 31-year-old Toronto Blue Jays pitcher, has opened up about his transformative year in South Korea’s KBO League after completing spring training preparations in Florida. The right-hander made waves last season by sweeping four major pitching trophies before signing a $3 million MLB contract.
A Trophy-Laden Campaign
During his KBO tenure, Ponce achieved an unprecedented feat as the first foreign pitcher to win the league’s initial quadruple crown – leading in wins, ERA, strikeouts, and innings pitched. His performance earned him both the regular season MVP and monthly MVP honors.
‘This season held special meaning for me,’ Ponce revealed in a recent YouTube video update. ‘When I look at my Golden Glove trophy, I see all the hard work from every pitcher who competed alongside me this year.’
Golden Glove Breakthrough
The 6’6″ pitcher made history by becoming the first foreign player to receive the coveted Golden Glove award in the KBO’s newly established category. ‘This wasn’t just another trophy,’ Ponce emphasized. ‘It represents something I’d been chasing my entire career.’
His Korean experience proved unexpectedly rewarding despite initial reservations about overseas play. ‘Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect coming here,’ he admitted. ‘But the way fans embraced the game – it reminded me why I fell in love with baseball.’
MLB Comeback Trail
Now preparing as Toronto’s fifth starter candidate, Ponce joins a rotation featuring Yusei Kikuchi and Chris Bassitt. The former Pirates prospect acknowledged the challenge ahead: ‘Spring training is about proving I belong here again. My time in Korea gave me the confidence boost I needed.’
Teammates have noted his refined pitching arsenal following the dominant KBO season where he posted a 2.81 ERA across 30 starts. Ponce remains grateful for the unexpected career resurgence: ‘Sometimes you need to step away to remember what makes this game great.’
