Eumseong Factory Blaze Under Investigation as Potential Arson
A foreign national perished in a warehouse fire in Eumseong County, with authorities now suspecting foul play may have been involved. The victim’s remains were found on July 1 after the June 30 blaze destroyed an industrial facility in Chungcheongbuk-do province.
Intensive Search Operation Underway
Police have launched a 72-hour intensive investigation starting July 2, combing through multiple industrial complexes in Cheongju and Gangwon regions. Despite discovering human remains at Building A – where one victim’s wristwatch was previously found on June 31 – officials confirm they haven’t yet located all missing persons.
Fire department officials warned about ongoing hazards: “The structure remains unstable with collapsed walls and exposed construction materials, requiring extreme caution during recovery efforts.” Emergency responders encountered significant obstacles due to flammable foam insulation materials that accelerated the fire’s spread.
Security Footage Reveals Suspicious Movements
Surveillance analysis indicates unusual activity prior to the 2:55 PM outbreak. “Camera footage suggests movement from Building A to Buildings B and C around ignition time,” a police representative disclosed. However, investigators cautioned that video evidence alone can’t determine cause: “Without eyewitness accounts, we can’t conclusively establish the fire’s origin yet.”
The fire escalated rapidly, prompting a Level 2 emergency response declaration just 28 minutes after initial reports. Firefighters battled thick smoke and structural hazards for hours before containing the blaze.
Safety Concerns Mount in Industrial Zone
The incident has raised alarms about safety protocols in the manufacturing district. Authorities confirmed all required permits were properly issued for the destroyed facility, which specialized in foam product manufacturing.
Forensic teams continue examining the site, with complete investigative findings expected after the three-day intensive search concludes on July 4.
