Manchester United began their new Premier League campaign with a surprising 0-2 defeat against newly promoted Hull City. The match, held at Hull’s MKM Stadium, marked a disappointing start to the season for manager Erik ten Hag, whose team conceded two goals from set pieces.
A Difficult Opening Day for Ten Hag’s United
The 2026-2027 Premier League season opener saw Manchester United fall to a 0-2 loss against Hull City. This result was a stark contrast to the high expectations surrounding the club under ten Hag. After taking over as interim manager mid-season and guiding the team to a strong finish, ten Hag was appointed permanent manager, leading to considerable optimism. Last season, the team had shown significant improvement, finishing third in the league with the most wins and goals scored, fueling hopes for a successful new era.
However, their first official match of the new season saw them undone by a Hull City side that had earned promotion back to the top flight after a nine-year absence. The defeat highlighted vulnerabilities, particularly in defending set pieces, which proved to be Hull’s decisive advantage.
Match Breakdown: First Half Struggles
Manchester United lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Mateus Cunha led the line, supported by the attacking midfield trio of Patrick Dorgu, Bruno Fernandes, and Bryan Mbeumo. The midfield engine room consisted of Andre Santos and Yuri Tielemans, while a back four of Luke Shaw, Aidyn Hebron, Harry Maguire, and Noussair Mazraoui protected goalkeeper Senné Lamens.
United had the first notable chance in the 13th minute. A cross from Shaw on the left flank was met by Mbeumo, whose shot was parried by Hull City goalkeeper Konstantinos Tsolakis. Just a minute later, Cunha attempted a shot from the left after receiving a pass from Mbeumo, but it was also saved by Tsolakis.
Hull responded quickly. In the 15th minute, Ollie McBurnie connected with a cross from Ryan Giles with a header, but Lamens made the save. The breakthrough for Hull came in the 17th minute. A corner kick from Regan Slater found its way into the box, and after McBurnie’s shot hit the post, the rebound fell to Semi Ajayi, who slotted it home from close range to give Hull a 1-0 lead. The defensive lapse from United on the set piece was evident, as they failed to properly deal with the dangerous situation and the subsequent second ball.
Despite the setback, Manchester United dominated possession for much of the remainder of the first half, with their share reaching 66.9% by the 27th minute. However, this territorial advantage did not translate into clear-cut chances against Hull’s defense. Dorgu’s shot from a Bruno pass went wide in the 25th minute, and another effort from Dorgu following a Maguire cross in the 29th minute lacked accuracy.
Hull City extended their lead in the 38th minute, again from a set piece. Mohamed Bellaoumi won a free-kick after being fouled by Tielemans. Slater delivered a sharp free-kick from the left, which Nabil Mendy met with a precise header, finding the corner of the net to make it 2-0. This second set-piece goal further exposed United’s defensive frailties in these situations.
In first-half stoppage time, Bruno attempted a long-range shot, but John Egan blocked it with his body. Statistically, Hull was more efficient in the first half, with an expected goals (xG) of 1.16 compared to United’s 0.71. Aside from Mbeumo’s early shot, United failed to seriously test Tsolakis.
Second Half Changes and Continued Frustration
Ten Hag made a substitution at the start of the second half, bringing on Marcus Rashford for Dorgu. This marked Rashford’s first appearance in a Manchester United matchday squad since December 30, 2024. Despite increased possession, United’s attack remained largely ineffective. By the 55th minute (10 minutes into the half), their possession had climbed to 69.5%, yet they struggled to create decisive opportunities.
Mazraoui’s cross in the 58th minute was collected by Ajayi, and Bruno’s mid-range shot in the 59th minute was saved by Tsolakis.
Ten Hag continued to push for attacking options, introducing Cesco and Nkunku for Santos and Tielemans in the 67th minute. In the 66th minute, Rashford made a left-wing incursion, and after a cut-back from Shaw, Cunha’s right-footed shot was blocked by Egan.
Hull nearly added to their lead in the 73rd minute. Cody Drameh intercepted a loose ball from McBurnie and shot from the edge of the penalty area, but it went just wide of the post. United’s high defensive line left space behind them, which Hull looked to exploit.
Manchester United did create a significant chance in the 78th minute. Cunha played a through ball to Mbeumo, who had made a run into the space behind the defense. Mbeumo’s shot was brilliantly saved by Tsolakis, denying United a lifeline. This was one of United’s most dangerous moments of the second half.
In a further attempt to spark the attack, ten Hag brought on Shaei Rasi and Diogo Dalot for Cunha and Mazraoui in the 80th minute. However, the offensive pressure did not yield results. Maguire’s direct shot from the left in the 84th minute went straight at Tsolakis, and Fernandes’ shot in the 89th minute was also saved by the goalkeeper.
In stoppage time, Cesco attempted to head a cross from Rashford, but Egan was there again to block. Ultimately, Manchester United could not find the back of the net.
Analysis and Looking Ahead
Despite finishing with higher expected goals (1.81) than Hull City (1.26), Manchester United’s actual score remained at 0-2. Hull City secured their first-ever Premier League victory against Manchester United, marking a perfect return to the top flight after their nine-year absence.
For Erik ten Hag, this opening-day defeat served as a stark warning. While his tenure as interim manager saw a remarkable turnaround, leading the team to third place in the league and qualification for the Champions League, this new season’s start against a promoted side like Hull City, where they conceded twice from set pieces, was a sobering experience. Manchester United held more possession and registered a higher xG, but they were outplayed in terms of defensive concentration and clinical finishing. The high expectations for ten Hag’s first full season have been tempered by a performance that fell short, indicating areas that require immediate attention.
