Actor Namgoong Min is set to star in the upcoming KBS2 weekend mini-series ‘The Ultimate Wedding,’ marking his return to the network after a seven-year hiatus. The drama’s production presentation was held on July 1st in Seoul, attended by the main cast including Namgoong Min, Lee Seol, Kim Dae-myung, and Lee Chung-ah, alongside director Kim Jung-hyun.
‘The Ultimate Wedding’: A High-Stakes Thriller
‘The Ultimate Wedding’ is described as a dangerous thriller about a man who becomes a criminal mastermind to save his wife from a forced marriage. The series is helmed by director Kim Jung-hyun, known for his work on ‘My Hyper Life’ and ‘Awaken.’
During the press conference, Director Kim Jung-hyun shared insights into the drama’s title and themes. “The title was given by the writer,” he explained. “Many people are married, and even I am married, but I often wonder if there is truly an ‘ultimate wedding.’ So many unpredictable things can happen in the process, and I felt that some of the events in our drama could fit within that concept.” He also mentioned that significant thought went into creating a poster design that would complement the title.
Casting and Character Dynamics
Director Kim also discussed the casting process, praising the actors for their contributions. “Namgoong Min perfectly embodies the character’s details without needing much explanation,” he stated. “I’ve worked with Lee Seol before, and in this project, she has shown a fearless portrayal of her character. Kim Dae-myung, usually known for his kind and gentle image, presents a frightening villainous side in this drama. Lee Chung-ah plays a role that is like a veil, so I cannot reveal too much, but she is an actress who is deeply immersed in her characters.”
The cast members expressed their excitement and anticipation for the project, highlighting the potential for strong on-screen chemistry.
Namgoong Min’s Anticipation for His KBS Comeback
Namgoong Min, returning to KBS dramas for the first time since ‘Doctor Prisoner’ seven years ago, shared his positive feelings about the network. “I have a long history with KBS dramas, and I’ve been pleased that my recent projects have been well-received by viewers,” he said. “Therefore, I felt confident that ‘The Ultimate Wedding’ would also be a successful project, and I believe we can achieve good results.”
He elaborated on his decision to join the drama: “When I first read the script, I had a good feeling about it, and the spark was immediate. I felt that viewers could easily follow the story and that it would resonate with a wide audience. I read the entire script, from the first to the fourth part, without pause due to its compelling pace.”
In ‘The Ultimate Wedding,’ Namgoong Min plays Kang Tae-joo, a doctor at Woori General Hospital and a neurosurgeon. Having recently become a father after four years of marriage, he addressed how his personal life influences his work. “Thank you for your congratulations. After over 25 years in acting, I haven’t reached a point where I can’t distinguish between reality and filming. So, I haven’t found it difficult in that regard. Due to the nature of my roles, which often involve intense emotions, I sometimes delve deeply into characters. However, the overall structure of this drama is so well-crafted that I didn’t feel the need to force that level of immersion.”
Lee Seol and Kim Dae-myung on Their Roles
Lee Seol portrays Go Se-yeon, the wife of Kang Tae-joo and the director of Woori General Hospital. This marks her second collaboration with Namgoong Min, following their work on the SBS drama ‘My Love.’ “It’s comfortable working with a senior actor on another project together,” Lee Seol commented. “I’ve been able to feel how much he loves acting.” She added, “Especially on my days off, I frequently bothered him by asking, ‘Could you read the script with me?’ and he kindly agreed every time. I want to express my gratitude once again.”
Kim Dae-myung plays Noh Man-hee, who runs a computer academy. He plays a character involved in a kidnapping plot. “I am grateful if viewers take a little interest in why my character is involved in this kidnapping,” Kim Dae-myung said. “It’s a drama that perfectly suits the season, and I believe viewers can enjoy it as a refreshing watch during the hot summer.”
Lee Chung-ah takes on the role of Kim Kyung-ae, a mysterious woman. “I came here because I wanted to be a part of this,” Lee Chung-ah stated. “I apologize that I don’t have much to say. Our drama is very refreshing and immersive, allowing viewers to follow along easily.” She expressed her hope that the audience would watch it with enjoyment.
Facing Competition and Looking Ahead
‘The Ultimate Wedding’ enters a competitive landscape, with the SBS Friday-Saturday drama ‘Chief Detective 1958’ already garnering significant attention, achieving a 15% viewership rating in just two episodes.
Namgoong Min humorously acknowledged the competition: “My representative work at KBS is ‘The King of Prosecutors,’ and since So Ji-sub’s drama is ‘Chief Detective 1958,’ I feel like he’s one step ahead of me, which is a bit bittersweet (laughs). I watched the drama because I heard it was doing well, and I found it very entertaining. The subject matter is fresh, and it seems to effectively capture Korea’s unique charm. It’s enjoyable to watch.”
He continued, “Although drama production is challenging these days, I’m happy that a competing drama is doing well. The only regret is that our drama’s time slot overlaps slightly with ‘Chief Detective 1958’ on Saturdays. Typically, episodes 3 and 4 are when a drama becomes most engaging, and that’s precisely the timing when ‘Chief Detective 1958’ is hitting its stride. However, we have Sundays, so I think we’ll be alright.”
‘The Ultimate Wedding’ is scheduled to premiere on July 4th at 9:20 PM.
