The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office inspection committee plans to seek an arrest warrant for Prosecutor Park Sang-young on the afternoon of May 11 over suspicions tied to the ‘Yeonwoo Salmon Booze Party.’ Park denied any involvement during initial questioning.
Details of the 2023 Event
Investigators link Park to a gathering on May 17, 2023, at the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office. Party organizers allegedly secured substantial donations and supplied salmon and alcohol to attendees, including former party leader Ping Hwa-boo-ji-sa and Prosecutor Kim Seong-tae. Discussions reportedly focused on channeling funds into political campaigns, with participants emphasizing a ‘more democratic’ approach to large-scale donations.
Both event attendees and Park maintained that no alcohol party occurred. However, a task force (TF) from the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office concluded otherwise, confirming the event through evidence review.
Analysis shows that during the election period, members of Park’s entire party used credit cards to purchase alcohol and related items, including brands like Kirin.
On March 28, Park testified before a National Assembly subcommittee, stating from his government office: “I personally bought alcohol from someone I met in the car.” Prosecutors challenged the TF’s probe, arguing that individual statements lack value and those with personal stakes must face proper legal scrutiny.
Next Steps in the Investigation
The inspection committee bases its warrant request on TF findings and demands Park’s appearance. Officials aim to report results to the chief investigator promptly and pursue appropriate disposition.
The chief investigator must resolve the warrant application by May 16. If detention proceeds, the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office convenes a hearing. Although concerns persist about delays due to perceived investigative shortcomings, prosecution officials hold authority over intent determinations.
Park’s Public Statements
In a May 8 Facebook post, Park declared: “If summoned, I will sincerely explain on site.” He added: “I plan to attend the Supreme Chief investigation.” Park also asserted: “No one has ever properly exposed a public servant, so it won’t happen here.”
Authorities retain options to impose travel bans on non-compliant individuals connected to the case.
