Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Munetaka Murakami, the Chicago White Sox first baseman, launched a solo home run in the ninth inning during his Major League Baseball debut on Opening Day against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on March 26, 2026.
The Brewers dominated with a 14-2 victory in their home opener. Murakami batted sixth as the first baseman and went 2-for-2 with one home run, one RBI, and two walks in limited action. Facing reliever Jake Woodford with a 1-ball, 1-strike count that stretched full, he crushed a 90.5 mph cutter. The blast carried 384 feet (117 meters) to right field at a 31-degree launch angle with an exit velocity of 103 mph (166 km/h).
Debut Performance Highlights
Despite the lopsided loss, Murakami’s ninth-inning solo shot as the leadoff hitter provided a bright spot for the White Sox. It marked his first MLB hit and home run, showcasing his power potential on the big stage.
Proven Power Hitter
Known as the “world’s No. 4 hitter,” Murakami earned the moniker during the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Despite a slump, he delivered clutch performances, including a go-ahead home run against a major leaguer in the semifinals that helped secure Japan’s championship.
In Nippon Professional Baseball, Murakami posted 36 home runs in 2019 and a league-leading 56 in 2022, earning MVP honors. He signed a two-year, $34 million deal with the White Sox.
Brewers Manager Impressed
Brewers manager Pat Murphy praised Murakami’s swing after the home run. “That was the best swing. I knew it was gone right away. He produced it with a smooth swing,” Murphy said.
