A woman in her 20s faces murder charges after lacing beverages with benzodiazepine drugs, resulting in the deaths of two men and leaving a third unconscious. Seoul Gangbuk Police Station referred her to the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors’ Office on February 19 with an arrest warrant for custodial prosecution.
Details of the Incidents
The suspect, identified only as Kim, allegedly provided drugged drinks to three men in their 20s between mid-December last year and January 9. Two victims died from the effects, while one lost consciousness. Benzodiazepine, a medication commonly prescribed for anxiety disorders and insomnia, was mixed into the beverages known as Haedang Yakmul.
Investigators determined that Kim precisely measured the drugs, drawing from research and experiments conducted at her boyfriend’s school.
Suspect’s Account
During questioning, Kim stated, “I took the medication prescribed to me at the hospital and also mixed it into drinks for others.” She added, “A quarrel broke out at the motel, so I gave it to him to put him to sleep, but I did not expect it to cause death.”
Kim initially claimed she only learned of the victims’ conditions after police connected her to the cases. However, evidence shows she continued administering the drugs even after the first overdose and actively monitored the victims’ statuses.
Key Evidence Uncovered
Police analysis of data from a Huawei smartphone, along with other forensic materials, confirmed Kim’s involvement. A profiler from the Seoul support office identified her as the main suspect, prompting the referral for prosecution.
Ongoing Investigation
An official from the investigation team noted, “We plan to continue probing to determine if additional victims exist.” Authorities expect further developments as the case proceeds.
