Incumbent Gyeongbuk Governor Lee Cheol-woo has secured the People Power Party’s nomination for a third term in the upcoming local supplementary election.
Primary Election Results
The party’s Central Election Committee announced the decision on the 14th following a competitive primary process conducted over two days, from the 12th to the 13th. The primaries combined 50% input from party members and 50% from general public opinion polls.
In the initial round, candidates excluding Governor Lee participated. Supreme Committee member Kim Jae-won emerged as the top challenger. The runoff then pitted Lee against Kim, with Lee prevailing to earn the nomination.
Democratic Party Confirms Opponent
The Democratic Party has nominated Oh Joo-jung as its candidate for the Gyeongbuk governor position. This sets up a rematch from the 2018 local election, where Lee defeated Oh to secure his previous victory.
