In the midst of spring training in Okinawa, Japan, KIA Tigers veteran right-hander Lee Tae-yang expressed deep resolve. “I never imagined spending a year keeping the team on edge with anxiety,” Lee stated earnestly, highlighting his commitment to regaining precise command on the mound.
Career Highlights and Return Attempts
Lee, born in 1990, traded from Hanwha Eagles to SK Wyverns (now SSG Landers) in 2020. He secured a four-year, 2.5 billion won FA contract with Hanwha in 2023, fulfilling his dream of returning home. However, challenges arose, leading Hanwha to leave him unprotected in the secondary draft. KIA selected him in the first round, paying a 400 million won transfer fee—plus 270 million won in FA compensation, totaling 670 million won.
2024 Setbacks and Recovery
Lee underwent elbow surgery in July 2024 and returned late in the season, struggling with 14 appearances, 11 1/3 innings pitched, and no quality starts or wins. Despite the hurdles, KIA invested confidently, viewing the signing as a testament to potential redemption through performance.
Impressive Spring Training Performance
Lee continues to sharpen his skills during camp. In a February 23 practice game at Kadena Stadium, the Korean WBC team fell 3-6. Entering as the fourth pitcher in the sixth inning, Lee delivered a scoreless frame on 13 pitches, allowing two hits but stranding runners. He mixed seven straight fastballs (141-143 km/h), three sliders, two forkballs, and one curveball effectively.
Earlier starters like Kim Tae-hyung and Hwang Dong-ha faced difficulties, yielding three runs each. Lee’s composure shone, striking out key batters and navigating traffic.
KIA’s Vision for Lee
KIA management plans to deploy Lee as a full-time starter, focusing on stability over immediate results. At 36, he seeks to prove his value, emphasizing team-first mindset. This strategic acquisition underscores KIA’s faith in veteran leadership for the upcoming season.
