The Korea Football Association (KFA) has appointed Lee Min-seong as coach for the U-23 national team, extending his role to the Olympic representative team. Officials prioritize his proven track record in Asian Games competitions.
Post-Tournament Review Meeting
On February 13, the KFA convened its general assembly for the first comprehensive review following the U-23 Asian Cup. Participants, including committee chairman Hyun Yeong-min, U-23 coach Lee Min-seong, and the coaching staff, evaluated performances from the recent event held on February 10.
The review focused on preparations for the 2026 AFC U-23 Asian Cup scheduled for January. Despite a fourth-place finish in the latest tournament—Korea’s best result using the U-23 squad—the association examined operational aspects and coaching strategies.
Rationale for Appointment
Lee Min-seong’s selection stems from his success in Asian Games events. Officials noted, “This appointment ensures continuity for U-23 operations while grooming Olympic candidates. It also involves tracking players for the U-20 World Cup.”
Prior to this, Korea relied on the U-21 team for Asian Games. In June 2024, the KFA announced operational adjustments for youth representative teams to align with Olympic pathways.
Format Changes and Strategic Outlook
The AFC has restructured the U-23 Asian Cup into a four-year Olympic qualifying cycle starting in 2026. This shift aligns with International Olympic Committee and FIFA discussions, targeting events like the 2028 LA Olympics.
The KFA emphasized, “We comprehensively monitor such changes. Both major tournaments remain within reach for Korean football.” The appointment aims to maximize medal potential in Asian Games while building depth for Olympic contention.
Addressing Recent Shortcomings
Following the latest U-23 Asian Cup, where fan expectations went unmet, the association conducted a thorough analysis. Coaching staff reviewed match data, individual performances, and overall preparation.
Officials explained, “Fair evaluation of tournament outcomes and internal games revealed areas for growth. Selected players for Asian Games medals receive focused training alongside Olympic hopefuls.”
Looking ahead, the KFA plans to strengthen the U-23 framework for the 2026 Asian Games and 2028 LA Olympics. Further appointments for specialized Olympic teams are in progress, with a four-year track record guiding player development.
