Hanwha Eagles infielder Oh Jae-won, 19, completed the Incheon spring camp and departed for Japan on January 23. Currently serving as the starting shortstop, he carries high expectations as the team’s top rookie prospect.
Overcoming Inexperience with Strong Fundamentals
The Hanwha lineup lacks seasoned central players, with foreign signings filling key roles. Oh Jae-won stepped up amid this setup, even prompting trade considerations for the center field position before settling on him. In high school, the three-year standout delivered standout performances, posting a .463 average over 30 games (105 at-bats, 46 hits) and a 1.195 OPS (on-base plus slugging).
During Tucson spring training, evaluators ranked him as Hanwha’s third-best prospect. Oh Jae-won demonstrated sharp plate discipline, rarely chasing bad pitches.
Impressive Spring Performances
In the January 10 Blue-White game, he blasted a home run and used power for an inside-the-park homer. He also legged out doubles from the outfield. On January 15 against the A’s, he notched three hits, including a super catch at first base.
Oh Jae-won joined Hanwha’s Japan camp on January 19 in Okinawa, preparing for the WBC exhibition games starting January 21 against teams from Korea and other nations.
Oh Jae-won’s Mindset and Ambitions
“There’s still so much to learn,” Oh Jae-won stated. “I’m receiving a lot of expectations, which feels good despite the pressure. These new experiences are helping me grow, so I’m enjoying the environment.”
He added, “The Tucson camp was a fresh challenge. Training anew feels right, staying connected with coaches and teammates is great, and contributing to the team gives me satisfaction. I have motivation because of that.”
Focused on refining his skills, Oh Jae-won reflected, “In baseball, only full effort counts—no half measures. I showed good swings, so fans saw a solid impression. There’s still room to improve; I think it’s good. I need to show more judgment in games.”
On detailed improvements, he emphasized, “In daily training, there’s much to absorb. Watch pitchers honing their skills. Speed is crucial with many strong hitters around. Focus on striking out less and hitting more.”
Hanwha views Oh Jae-won as a reliable leader. “I must do well individually,” he said. “In team meetings, I need to speak up. If opportunities arise, that would be great.”
Looking ahead to facing national team players, Oh Jae-won affirmed, “Expectations are high. It’s motivating to compete with KBO stars. I believe in becoming a good experience. I’m confident in succeeding as a major league entry-level player through consistent showings.”
