Aired on KBS2’s ‘Celebrity Illness Secrets’ at 8:30 p.m. on May 5, the late Shin Hae-Cheol’s longtime manager, Mister Lee, shared a deeply emotional account of the musician’s final days.
The Fatal Deception
Shin Hae-Cheol passed away in October 2014 while preparing for a concert in Boktong. He fell victim to a fraudulent medical diagnosis and began taking prescribed herbal remedies. After consuming the treatment, Shin noted, “The pain has eased so much now—I can’t bear it.”
This so-called “miracle cure-all herbal medicine,” which claimed to work without reason, proved disastrous. His wife questioned, “Does the pain really subside after taking the medicine?” unable to conceal her frustration. Medical evaluations later confirmed the diagnosis was inaccurate, with no anticipated benefits.
Family’s Lasting Regret
The family’s profound grief surfaced as deep regret. Studio audience members expressed shock, while Shin’s wife and eldest son probed, “Was it a scam?” and “Did regret emerge from that moment?”
The family explained, “In a healthy relationship, such heartfelt regret simply does not arise.” Experts agreed, highlighting psychological distress. The eldest son reflected, “I should have scrutinized the treatment more thoroughly with the wife.”
This deceptive remedy exposed harsh truths about Shin Hae-Cheol’s final struggles, underscoring the scam’s role.
A Pioneering Musical Legacy
Shin Hae-Cheol debuted in 1988 with “To That Person,” securing massive college campus success as a heavy metal sensation. The track featured melodic heavy metal elements, pulling listeners into its intense world.
He later shaped the heavy metal scene through iconic albums like “Jaur” and “Ban-hang.” In the 1990s, he fronted the band N.E.X.T., blending jazz and rock while captivating audiences at society events.
Even without top commercial hits, Shin curated a unique band sound, prioritizing musical integrity over sales. He once aimed for global heavy metal stardom but focused domestically.
Shin supported emerging talents like Seo Tae-ji, Seo Taiji, and Kim Dong-ryul by sharing insights and gear freely. He emphasized, “My teaching to the members is not to teach them—it’s straightforward sincerity.”
