A deputy leader of a major marijuana smuggling operation faces an additional three years and six months in prison after courts uncovered further drug trafficking crimes. The Seoul Central District Court imposed the sentence on 34 members of the syndicate, including the ringleader, during a hearing on the 3rd.
Sentencing for Additional Offenses
The deputy leader, referred to as A, received the extended term for specialized drug sales involving MDMA and other substances. Recent economic data confirms the operation smuggled significant quantities from the Netherlands via Telegram.
Details of the Smuggling Operation
Between late December 2023 and early January 2024, the group imported 1,230 grams of MDMA and ecstasy pills, along with 460 milliliters of liquid LSD, for domestic distribution and sales. Authorities seized these shipments as part of a broader crackdown.
The operation began in August 2023, when A coordinated overseas purchases through a Dutch vendor to import ecstasy pills and LSD for resale within South Korea.
Prior Convictions and Investigation Insights
A had previously been convicted in a similar marijuana smuggling case. In that instance, he procured 2,000 grams of ecstasy abroad and smuggled 526 grams into the country, earning a five-year sentence in April.
Investigators highlight the syndicate’s large-scale flow of marijuana resin and other drugs, along with high recidivism rates and involvement in violent crimes. “Drug crimes threaten public health and enable addicts to commit further offenses, inflicting widespread harm on society,” the court stated. “Stern measures are essential.”
The defense acknowledged the repeated offenses and expressed remorse, noting ongoing reflection amid the prosecution’s concerns.
