Lindsey Vonn, the 42-year-old American skiing legend known as the ‘Ski Queen,’ has returned to the Bansko slopes half a year after a hamstring injury, while grappling with the heartbreaking loss of her beloved pet dog, Leo.
Announcement of Leo’s Passing
Vonn shared the news on her Instagram on the 18th, revealing that Leo passed away on the 9th. “The past few days mark the hardest time in my life,” she stated. “It’s still hard to accept that Leo has left us.”
Reflecting on the emotional toll, Vonn added, “Even on the day of my accident, Leo sensed my pain and stayed by my side. A year and a half ago, Leo survived lymphoma treatment and brought me the greatest comfort. But this time, my heart broke even more as Leo endured suffering, unable to keep up with his strong spirit physically.”
Leo’s Bond with Vonn
Leo joined Vonn during her second ACL injury recovery. “While watching the Sochi Olympics from the sofa, Leo hugged me tightly, showered me with love even when I was depressed and immobile, and brightened my tough times over 13 years,” Vonn recalled.
“This pain draws me closer to Leo—I believe he’s always by my side,” she continued. “This anxiety will turn into even greater love for him.” Vonn affirmed, “Leo is now in a good place.” She noted receiving more condolence letters daily: “I close my eyes and feel Leo watching over me.”
Leo departed peacefully, with Vonn sharing his final embrace and message of “love you forever.”
Vonn’s Resilience Amid Setbacks
Just nine days before her Olympic appearance, Vonn tore her left knee’s ACL during training. Despite the injury, she competed in the women’s downhill event on the 8th at Italy’s Cortina d’Ampezzo Topannne Alpine Center, starting 13.4 seconds behind the leader before crashing, losing consciousness, and sustaining a severe concussion.
Helicopter-transported to a hospital, she later transferred for further treatment and diagnosis. After four surgeries, Vonn returned to the United States, with additional procedures expected.
