A former Criminal Affairs Division Chief at Seoul’s Gangnam Police Station, who led the investigation into comedian Park Na-rae’s case, has joined a prominent law firm representing her shortly after retiring, raising concerns over potential conflicts of interest.
Timeline of Events
The official, who held the position since December last year, stepped down last month and immediately began working at the law firm handling Park Na-rae’s defense. An individual who met the chief post-retirement confirmed the swift transition during a recent discussion.
The Gangnam division conducted the probe into allegations against Park Na-rae, including manager assault and medical law violations. Observers note this move effectively shifts the former investigator to the side of the accused.
Responses from Involved Parties
The ex-chief stated, “During my tenure, I did not issue structural directives on the case, and even after joining the firm, I have no involvement in the matter.”
Law firm representatives explained that the hiring decision for the individual was already finalized prior to the events in question.
Allegations Against Park Na-rae
Park Na-rae faces complaints from former managers accusing her of workplace harassment and aggravated assault. Additional scrutiny involves claims she received unauthorized medical treatments from an unqualified practitioner, known as the ‘injection auntie,’ prompting a medical law violation inquiry.
Complainants allege they were forced into after-hours cleanup duties and struck with a glass during a gathering. Related sites span six Gangnam locations and two in Yeongdeungpo, totaling eight.
Last December, filings included asset freeze requests alongside the assault charges. Prosecutors eyed an indictment on December 12 but delayed it, citing unfavorable timing and public attention risks that could overshadow the case.
Gangnam Police plan to summon Park Na-rae soon as a suspect for questioning on the assault and medical violation charges.
