KT Wiz pitcher Jeon Yeong-ju, now 26, has stunned observers with a dramatic resurgence, clocking a stable 153km/h fastball just seven years after his rookie-of-the-year triumph.
From Pinpoint Control to Velocity Surge
Jeon Yeong-ju debuted as the 2019 first-place rookie sensation for KT Wiz, renowned for his pinpoint accuracy around 140km/h. Early promise faded amid control issues, wild pitches, and hit batters, including stints with Ulsan Weilers and Hanwha Eagles. In one game, he posted a 1.2 ERA over 44 2/3 innings but struggled with five homers in two pairs. Even against hitters like Kim Do-gyu, his command faltered.
Despite challenges, Jeon maintained a positive outlook, embracing extra bullpen work. KT recognized his potential as a “non-flashy starter,” fueling hopes for a comeback.
The Physical Transformation
Jeon credits rigorous weight training and dietary changes for his revival. He gained 9kg, reaching 90kg from 81kg at season’s start, boosting his frame for greater power. “I’ve completely changed my body weight and muscle mass through intense offseason training,” Jeon stated. “I lacked the joy of hitting fastballs before, but now my body fully absorbs the power.”
This overhaul unlocked exceptional velocity. Last year, his peak reached 146km/h, climbing to 149km mid-season and now stabilizing at 153km/h. “Throwing over 140km in games dropped my speed by 3km/h annually before,” Jeon explained. “Receiving injury rehab training fixed that—my body wasn’t handling the center properly during at-bats.”
Coach’s Praise and Mindset Shift
KT coach Kim Do-gyu highlights Jeon’s mound presence: “He possesses the stuff to check hitters from the bullpen with one inning.” Fans notice the difference in his dominant deliveries.
Jeon reflects on overcoming heavy training: “No more ups and downs like before. Conditioning feels good, and I’ve added 8kg to my center of gravity.” He dismisses past inconsistencies: “First games were the same whether one or two—pure power now.”
Looking ahead, Jeon eyes team contributions: “As first-place rookie, I carry that resolve. Many worries plagued me, but fans expect different now—it’s honest.” He appreciates support from coach, catcher, and fans alike.
