Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed heartfelt gratitude to South Korean President Lee Jae-myung for his warm congratulations following her party’s dominant win in the House of Representatives election.
Landslide Victory Secures Constitutional Power
The election, held on January 8, saw Takaichi’s faction claim 316 seats out of 465 in the lower house, surpassing the 310-seat threshold required to propose constitutional amendments. This marks the first time a single party has captured more than two-thirds of the seats, a historic achievement unmatched in decades.

She emphasized the need for Japan and South Korea to collaborate as key partners in the global supply chain. “Japan and Korea must work together across international frameworks to address pressing issues,” she added. Takaichi highlighted shared concerns amid current geopolitical tensions and noted that leaders from both nations align on critical policy matters.
“Even if it seems forward, I intend to proactively and securely advance this vital relationship alongside President Lee and his leadership team,” Takaichi wrote. She expressed optimism about a future visit to South Korea, saying, “I look forward to connecting through the ‘Seoul Diplomacy’ initiative.”
