Anxiety surrounds Middle East sports events as the US-Iran conflict shows signs of prolongation. UEFA has scrapped plans to host the 2026 Finalissima at Qatar’s Lusail Stadium.
UEFA’s Cancellation Announcement
UEFA announced the decision in a statement, canceling the match originally set for Lusail Stadium. The Finalissima pits the UEFA Euro 2024 champion, likely Spain, against the 2024 Copa América winner, expected to be Argentina.
“Current political instability in Qatar makes it difficult to accommodate large crowds,” UEFA stated. “We tried to accommodate the Argentine Football Association (AFA), but they did not accept.”
UEFA added, “The AFA proposed holding the event after the 2026 World Cup, but no suitable dates exist on Spain’s schedule afterward.”
Alternative Venue Proposals
UEFA suggested Argentina select a stadium in either Real Madrid’s Bernabéu or FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou for a single-leg match. However, complexities around home-and-away formats led to the impasse.
Spanish FA Responds
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) clarified its position. “Spain made no statements or applied pressure during the competition. No coercion occurred in any form,” the RFEF said.
The federation provided full details to UEFA, expressed readiness to choose another venue, and shifted responsibility for the cancellation to the AFA.
Background on Finalissima
The Finalissima is a prestigious single-match event held every four years between UEFA and CONMEBOL champions. In 2022, Argentina defeated Italy at Wembley Stadium in London.
