Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, recognized as MLB’s top changeup artist, has reversed his earlier reservations about the World Baseball Classic (WBC). After recent encounters with U.S. national team members, Skubal expressed stronger desire to join the squad.
Change of Heart
Skubal previously indicated that his WBC participation hinged on a strong spring performance and rotation spot with the Tigers. He emphasized the need to earn his camp invitation through results. However, meetings with fellow pitchers, including Jason Adam, prompted a shift. “I want to do the WBC even more now,” Skubal stated.
In the National League, Paul Skenes of the Pirates continues drawing significant fan attention, and both pitchers eye spots on the U.S. roster. U.S. front office officials had earlier critiqued Skubal, urging him to avoid discussing unproven goals.
Strong Spring Outings
Skubal backed his renewed commitment with impressive results. On March 8 (Korean time) in Houston, he delivered three innings, allowing two hits and one earned run, topping ERA among international pitchers in the game. His effort contributed to a U.S. team victory.
The following day, March 9, Skubal took the mound in another spring contest, showcasing his determination.
Motivation Amid Past Setbacks
A prior injury sidelined Skubal from his first WBC opportunity, fueling his current drive. Teammates describe him as more motivated than ever to represent the U.S. Skenes’ associates have highlighted efforts to bolster teammates like Adam for national team roles, contrasting with Skubal’s path but earning broad support.
U.S. managers view Skubal as a potential reserve, while he actively consults his agent to push for inclusion.
