A special investigation team examining external pressure on the Coupang investigation indicted Eom Hee-jun, former chief of the Gwangju High Prosecutors’ Office and current Gwangju High Court judge, and Kim Dong-hwi, former chief prosecutor of the Busan High Prosecutors’ Office and current Busan High Court judge.
Abuse of Authority Charges
The team summoned both individuals on the 27th and charged them with abuse of power. Investigators state, “Eom and Kim prosecutors directly pressured department heads to appoint a specific person as chief of the violent crimes division.”
The indictments also cover interference in personnel evaluations tied to responses for the National Assembly audit.
Key Revelations from Probe
Prosecutor Mun revealed that during last October’s National Assembly government audit—where both served as newly appointed chief prosecutors—they arbitrarily selected and approved personnel for the Coupang chief prosecutor’s office.
The permanent special counsel team launched in December and continues to pursue these allegations.
