South Africa secured a decisive 2-0 lead in their three-match Twenty20 International series against the West Indies following a dominant seven-wicket victory at Centurion on Thursday. Chasing a formidable target of 222, the Proteas reached the total with 15 balls to spare, powered by a masterclass from opener Quinton de Kock.
De Kock and Rickelton Overwhelm West Indies Attack
Quinton de Kock was the architect of the chase, smashing a career-best 115 runs from just 49 deliveries. His century came off 43 balls, remarkably mirroring the timing of his previous ton against the same opponents at this venue in 2023. De Kock’s innings included 10 towering sixes, showcasing his ability to manipulate the field and punish any delivery regardless of line or length.
The victory was largely built on a blistering second-wicket partnership of 162 runs in just 71 balls. Ryan Rickelton provided exceptional support, contributing a rapid 77 from 36 deliveries. By the time de Kock was eventually caught off the bowling of Akeal Hosein while attempting a third consecutive six, the foundation for a comfortable win had been firmly established.
First Innings: West Indies Build a Heavy Total
Earlier in the evening, the West Indies were put into bat and capitalized on a batting-friendly surface to post 221 for four. The innings was highlighted by a 126-run stand between Shimron Hetmyer and Brandon King. Hetmyer led the charge with a brisk 75 off 42 balls, while King fell just short of a half-century, dismissed for 49.
The tourists seemed poised for an even larger total before Keshav Maharaj turned the tide. The left-arm spinner was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 4 for 22 in his four-over spell. Maharaj’s disciplined bowling, which included the key wicket of Hetmyer, effectively slowed the West Indian momentum during the middle overs.
A late-innings flourish from Sherfane Rutherford ensured the visitors posted a competitive score. Rutherford, drawing on his experience at the ground from domestic T20 leagues, struck an unbeaten 57 off 24 balls to push the total past the 220-run mark.
Looking Ahead to the World Cup
With the series already decided, the two teams will meet for the final T20I at The Wanderers in Johannesburg this Saturday. Following the conclusion of this tour, both squads will shift their focus to the T20 World Cup in India.
The West Indies are scheduled to begin their World Cup campaign against Scotland at Eden Gardens on February 7. South Africa will commence their tournament journey two days later, facing Canada in Ahmedabad on February 9.
