President Lee Jae-myung visited the site of the devastating fire at a Daejeon government dormitory on March 21, inspecting the damage and offering condolences to victims’ families.
Commitment to Investigation and Responsibility
During the visit, President Lee addressed participants, stating, “The government will thoroughly clarify the cause and circumstances of this incident. We will ensure no similar tragedy occurs again by implementing fundamental countermeasures.”
Following the direct inspection of the dormitory’s non-executive staff quarters, he posted on X (formerly Twitter) in response to a message about taking responsibility to the end. He declared, “Anything that endangers citizens’ lives and safety constitutes the gravest offense against the nation.”
Actions at the Fire Site
President Lee directly examined the fire-ravaged areas, including non-executive quarters and missing persons search operations. He met with bereaved families, delivering messages of comfort, and engaged with executives and staff on concerns.
He emphasized reflecting party leaders’ views to pinpoint presidential accountability and stressed proper execution of recovery efforts for the deceased during business hours.
“Even within government circles, outrage simmers over the party’s role in probing causes, and we will ensure these reflections lead to change,” he added. “Even without direct involvement, accountability must be upheld.”
Policy and Leadership Emphasis
Highlighting the gravity of precious lives lost, President Lee noted, “A policy government must empathize deeply with citizens’ concerns. Post-incident, related agencies have shown genuine commitment.”
He convened key executive party members, conveying deep gratitude. “From the president’s office, we extend sincere condolences to those affected by this incident,” he conveyed.
The fire claimed 14 lives, with party executives providing additional support from the president’s office, bringing total aid recipients to 60.
