Kim Kyung-soo, chairman of the Presidential Committee on the Local Era, announced on March 3 that he will conclude his tenure as of March 5 and shift focus to Gyeongnam Province. “As of the 5th, I am wrapping up my chairmanship and heading to Gyeongnam,” he stated.
Public Declaration at Seoul Workshop
Kim delivered the announcement at the HJ Business Center in Seoul’s Gwanhwamun area, immediately after a workshop on regional collaboration for local era promotion committees. He highlighted the event’s importance, noting, “Today’s workshop holds meaning as it organizes the framework we have built so far.”
The statement marks a formal declaration of his candidacy for Gyeongnam governor. Public selectors for the position attended the gathering.
Re-election Strategy and Challenges
Addressing the backdrop of his gubernatorial re-challenge, Kim explained that narrow political calculations, roadmaps, and initial polling dips threaten the race. However, he emphasized, “From the current administration’s viewpoint, realization must come through tangible achievements.” He added that provincial government services have reached a conclusion incorporating the governor’s election.
If Kim pursues the Gyeongnam candidacy and a trusted vice chairman targets the Chungbuk governorship, the committee’s nationwide momentum remains intact, sources indicate.
Realistic Path Forward
In response, Kim affirmed, “Reflecting surveys, roadmaps, and governor gauges represents the most realistic approach, and that policy stands decided.” He continued, “We seek a heavyweight leader to unite vice chairmen into a single, focused unit.”
Kim further noted opportunities from the presidential office: “Quickly appointing successors allows central figures to transition into local leadership roles across five provinces and three special regions without disruption.”
