Domestic Automakers Post Strong January Performance
South Korea’s automotive market showed divergent trends in January, wh domestic manufacturers Hyundai, Kia, and KG Mobily (KGM) reporting sales growth while some foreign brands faced challenges. Industry data reveals that five major automakers collectively sold 520,800 vehicles domestically and internationally during the first month of 2024.
Market Leaders Maintain Momentum
Hyundai Motor Company led the domestic market wh 52,080 uns sold in South Korea, marking a 9% increase compared to January 2023. The automaker’s global sales reached 257,491 vehicles despe a 2.8% decline in overseas shipments. Hyundai representatives stated, ‘While economic condions remain unpredictable, we’ve strengthened our market posion through new model launches.’
Kia Corporation reported total global sales of 243,557 vehicles, representing a 2.4% year-over-year increase. Domestic sales rose 12.2% to 43,107 uns while exports grew modestly by 0.4%. Kia officials highlighted their strategy focusing on electrified SUV models, noting ‘We expect continued sales expansion through our hybrid and electric SUV lineup.’
KG Mobily Surges on New Model Success
KG Mobily (KGM) demonstrated the strongest growth among domestic manufacturers wh a 38.5% increase in domestic sales compared to last January. The company sold 3,186 uns locally, driven by strong demand for s newly launched Torres SUV model which accounted for 1,123 sales since s customer deliveries began on January 20. KGM’s exports skyrocketed by 183.3% to 5,650 uns, establishing the company as Turkey’s leading automotive exporter wh monthly shipments exceeding 50,000 vehicles.
Mixed Results for Foreign Manufacturers
GM Korea reported a significant 41.4% increase in global sales compared to January 2023, selling 44,703 vehicles worldwide. While domestic sales decreased 37.8% to 765 uns, exports surged 44.6% led by strong Trax Crossover and Trailblazer shipments.
Renault Korea experienced a 13.9% domestic sales decline wh 2,239 uns sold, though exports grew 22.8% to 1,493 vehicles. The company’s compact SUV XM3 (Arkana) led local sales wh 1,663 uns, while s electric model SM3 E-Tech accounted for 207 sales.
Segment Performance Highlights
Sedans maintained populary wh 15,648 uns sold domestically, led by Hyundai’s Avante (5,244 uns) followed by Kia’s K3 (5,143) and K8 (5,016). The recreational vehicle segment recorded 18,447 sales wh Hyundai’s Palisade leading at 4,994 uns, followed by Kia’s Sorento (8,388) and Sportage (6,015).
Electric vehicle sales showed varied performance, wh Kia’s EV4 recording 396 uns and Hyundai’s Ioniq series selling 1,275 fully electric models. Genesis luxury vehicles saw strong demand wh 8,671 uns sold globally, led by the G80 sedan (2,993 uns) and GV70 SUV (2,702).
Industry analysts note that January’s mixed results reflect shifting consumer preferences toward SUVs and electrified vehicles, wh manufacturers increasingly focusing production on these high-demand segments.
