Eumseong County in Chungcheongbuk-do promotes Daesomyeon from township to town status. Officials confirmed on March 9 that Daesomyeon secured the highest score for this upgrade from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
Meeting Strict Promotion Criteria
Regulatory standards and tailored evaluations drive the push for Daesomyeon’s town designation. Full conversion expands Eumseong’s administrative structure from two towns and seven townships to three towns and six townships.
Daesomyeon bears a heavy population load. In 2006, its residents numbered 7,536, but factory closures and outflows caused sharp declines. Today, the population surpasses 20,000. End-of-January domestic figures hit 20,688, rising to 20,924 by February’s end—the county’s highest among its nine townships and towns.
The 10th administrative district review selects townships with over 20,000 residents, urban population ratios above 40%, and factory totals exceeding 40% of city benchmarks. Daesomyeon fulfills all requirements.
Economic Hub with Strong Growth
As a key agricultural zone featuring an IC interchange and dense settlement, Daesomyeon hosts 90 operating companies. Factory complexes draw investments from Samjeong and Soseok districts, with 7,000 pyeong under construction.
To align services with rising numbers and new Sokdo residents, Eumseong bolsters administrative capacity via township promotion to the Jinan Regional Office. Efforts include population surveys, resident polls, and council consultations submitted to the ministry.
Future steps encompass mock population concentration tests, public administrative reviews, road and facility safety diagnostics, and small-scale operations.
A county official stated, “Daesomyeon’s promotion marks a vital step toward full regional transformation.” The official added, “New urban hubs and central relocations position it as a cornerstone for broader development.”
