Malaysian waters turned perilous for a Korean girl snorkeling when strong currents swept her away, but quick action by nearby Chinese tourists saved her life.
Details of the Dramatic Rescue
On March 17, visitors reported that the incident unfolded near Kotakinabalu during a snorkeling excursion. The girl, not wearing a life jacket, was carried off by sudden sea changes. Observing from afar, the Chinese group sprang into action.
Using a long pole, they extended it toward her while snorkeling themselves. Despite two individuals attempting a direct grab without success, the team collaborated seamlessly to pull her to safety. First aid was administered on-site, and officials confirmed no lasting injuries.
Rescuer Shares Experience
One rescuer recounted the urgency: “Spotting someone in distress speaking Korean compelled us—we had to recognize the language first to act.”
In a follow-up interview, the individual expressed joy: “Thrilled to aid a foreigner abroad, hoping she recalls the warmth and kindness shown.”
