Actor Byun Woo-seok captivated audiences at the production presentation for the upcoming MBC drama 21st Century Great Army Wife held in Seoul’s Gangnam district. The event showcased the cast and highlighted the unique storyline blending modern elements with Joseon-era intrigue.
Star-Studded Press Showcase
Director Park Joon-hwa, actress Bae Ai-yoo, Byun Woo-seok, No Sang-hyun, Gong Sung-yeon, Yoo Soo-bin, and Lee Yeon attended the April 6 gathering. Byun struck dynamic poses for photos, generating buzz for his lead role.
Plot Overview
The series reimagines a 21st-century commoner thrust into the role of wife to a powerful Joseon figure. While ordinary dramas feature typical romances, this narrative taps into the fresh appeal of Byun’s character, Yi An Daegun—a passionate yet aloof nobleman who cherishes his love deeply, regardless of origin.
Byun Woo-seok described his role: “Yi An Daegun is the director citizens love the most, a faith in love that doesn’t waver whether inside or outside the palace.” He shared his inspiration: “Seeing people moved to tears watching the trailer made this project worthwhile. Yi An Daegun’s story resonated emotionally, drawing me in.”
From ‘Seo Jae-eop and Twirl’ to New Heights
Two years after his breakout in Seo Jae-eop and Twirl, Byun returns with this casting coup. He reflected on the shift: “Many concerns and love surround this role.” The actor emphasized growth: “If you love someone more deeply despite bumps, that’s true affection. Even minimal characters deserve top-tier performances—as an actor, that’s my mindset.”
Byun elaborated: “The country calls it a ‘water army great army,’ but I think differently. Objectively, it’s a single, irreplaceable person, yet subjectively, many joys and hurts exist. That’s why I connected emotionally.” He added eagerly: “Expect the greatest water army thrill. Please anticipate it.”
The drama premieres April 10 at 9:40 p.m. on MBC, promising nationwide appeal through various platforms.
