The Korean Pro Football League has eliminated the mandatory U-22 squad quotas for all 22 K League 1 teams. K League 2 clubs also finalized their rosters without promotion-relegation constraints. Overall, the leagues adjusted player allocations to safeguard U-22 selections, enabling teams to prioritize top performers regardless of age restrictions.
Real Skill Drives Youth Boom
Even without quotas, clubs actively pursue U-22 players for their proven abilities on the pitch. Previously criticized as a potential drawback, the absence of rules now sparks a surge in young talent acquisitions. Teams strengthen lineups by targeting these prospects, treating them as essential assets.
For the 2026 K League 1 season, clubs will designate the top five foreign players by the 24th. Remaining slots may fill via U-22 quotas. Across 28 teams (up to 29 including Pohang Steelers), officials assigned 28 players specifically under U-22 guidelines, with additional standout recruits secured independently.
FIFA registration limits highlight the trend: Kwangju FC leads with seven players born between 2004 and 2007. Pohang Steelers follows with four. Among all 29 squads, 2007-born players dominate, totaling five signings.
Coaches Embrace the Shift
Kwangju FC coach Park Tae-ha noted the transformation: “The first half was tough, but watching players step up and perform has been rewarding. They showed pride. To our players, especially promising foreign talents heading overseas in June, well done. I trust and believe in them.”
Debut Stars Light Up the League
Jeju SK’s 2005-born Joo In-jeong made a strong first-team debut, building momentum. Kim Cheon Sangmu’s 2004-born Park Se-jin shines brightly. Pohang’s 2005-born Hwang Seo-woong and Gangwon FC’s 2005-born Shin Min-ha deliver consistent activity.
Gyeongnam FC’s 2007-born Kim Hyun-woon scored the decisive goal in a 22nd-round clash against Yeollin Gimpo FC, securing the club’s first league victory. As a pure striker, he entered as a substitute against Daizen and notched his debut tally. Gyeongnam notched its initial win, signaling greater achievements ahead in K League 1’s youngest powerhouse striker.
