Authorities in Seoul’s Gangnam district are investigating actor Lee Jae-ryong, 62, for drunk driving a heavy truck that struck a central divider before fleeing the scene near Samsung Central Station on Line 9. The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. on July 7 in a nearby parking area.
Details of the Crash and Assault
Lee allegedly operated the vehicle under the influence, collided with the divider, and fled, striking a victim in the process. The victim, who had not consumed alcohol, sustained severe injuries including a fractured jaw and remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Following the crash, Lee visited the victim’s residence and carried out an assault, an act captured on CCTV footage. He later reported the accident from an acquaintance’s home.
Police Investigation
Investigators confirm Lee consumed additional alcohol at the scene after the collision. An official stated, “Even though this individual drank alcohol on-site post-accident, we witnessed it and are pursuing the case.”
Police plan to charge Lee with fleeing the scene, intimidation through post-accident threats, and drunk driving upon apprehension. He remains at large as charges are prepared.
Prior Offenses
This marks a pattern for Lee. In June 2019, he assaulted a port worker while intoxicated in Seoul. Additionally, in 2003, he crashed into another vehicle in Gangnam-gu while drunk, then ingested more alcohol, leading to further charges.
