South Korea’s World Baseball Classic team delivered a commanding 11-4 victory over the Czech Republic on March 5 in Tokyo, marking their first win in the tournament since 2009 after a 17-year drought.
Dominant Performance Secures Opening Victory
The national squad exploded for 11 runs, showcasing offensive firepower in their Pool B opener. This triumph highlights Korea’s resurgence on the international stage, with players stepping up decisively against a resilient Czech pitching staff.
Cleanup hitter Kim Do-young, representing KIA, proved pivotal. Batting third, the 2024 league MVP hopeful crushed a home run during his first at-bat, sending a towering shot that energized the team. He finished with three hits in four plate appearances, including a double, a single, and the homer, driving in key runs.
Kim Do-young’s Rise and Impact
Kim joined the squad late but wasted no time making his mark. Despite prior commitments, his powerful swing and plate discipline strengthened KIA and now bolsters the national team. His consistent performance underscores Korea’s depth, rivaling top talents in Japan.
Post-game, Kim reflected on his outing: “Today, I struggled with concentration in the batter’s box. Even solid contact to the opposite field turned into flies due to poor focus. I’m working on correcting that.” He added optimism for the future: “The next game demands even more. I plan to time pitches perfectly for that crucial home run.”
Kim acknowledged the stakes: “No special pressure from this being a WBC opener. With heightened tension in key moments, intensity builds naturally. Future games will bring sharper focus and greater excitement.”
Looking Ahead to Israel Clash
South Korea faces Israel on March 6 in their next matchup. Despite missing some stars like Kim Joo-won in recent series, the team united effectively. Kim’s timely addition, alongside heavy hitters like Kim Hye-seong and veterans such as Choi Jeong and Lee Jung-hoo, powered multi-run innings.
Japan’s regional powerhouses also field elite lineups, but Kim remains confident: “I feel great mentally. Korea has grown stronger. Overseas players’ involvement adds depth—if we stay sharp, success follows.”
