Colombo, January 31: England white-ball captain Harry Brook reveals he falsely claimed to be alone during a confrontation with a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand last October to shield his teammates from scrutiny.
The incident occurred on October 31 in Wellington, where Brook was denied entry to the venue and subsequently struck by security. England was touring New Zealand at the time. The 26-year-old captain has since expressed regret over his actions, noting they caused embarrassment to himself and the team.
Brook’s Statement on the Matter
In a statement released on Friday, Brook takes full responsibility for his conduct. “I accept responsibility for my actions in Wellington and acknowledge that others were present that evening,” he said. “I regret my previous comments and my intention was to protect my teammates from being drawn into a situation that arose as a result of my own decisions.”
Brook, who is currently captaining England in a Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka, adds that he has apologized and continues to reflect on the events. “This has been a challenging period in my career, but one from which I am learning,” he stated. “I recognize that I have more to learn regarding the off-field responsibilities that come with leadership and captaincy.”
Ongoing Success and Future Matches
Despite the off-field issue, Brook guides England to victory in the recent one-day series against Sri Lanka. The team leads 1-0 in the following T20 series. England prepares to launch their T20 World Cup campaign against Nepal in Mumbai on February 8.
