An 85-year-old woman known affectionately as Kim Halmoni has earned the highest admission score for the Department of Future Education at Sookmyung Women’s University. She completed the process on the 27th, showcasing remarkable dedication.
From Self-Taught Literacy to Top Student
Kim Halmoni self-studied the Korean alphabet at age 78 before pursuing higher education. She later volunteered at middle and high schools and enrolled at Sookmyung Women’s University. In 2023, she appeared on the tvN program ‘You Quiz on the Block,’ gaining widespread attention. She also received an award for education ministry advisory work at the 22nd National Conference for Average Citizens’ Education.
Despite her age, Kim Halmoni bridged significant gaps during her studies. Peers were typically a quarter of her age, and she relied on handwritten reports since computers proved challenging. “I struggled with reading, so I read books aloud three times a day at home,” she shared. University seniors noted that public service coursework differed from high school, involving extensive reports, yet she felt less burdened than expected.
Passion Drives Continued Learning
Balancing two jobs without a steady teaching role, Kim Halmoni attended classes at school while handling one at home. She credits her persistence for overcoming obstacles. “No matter the hardship, I endured because fellow night school students urged, ‘Halmoni, keep going like that.’ Even now, I motivate current students,” she explained.
Her influence extends to other teachers, who value her grounded perspective. Kim Halmoni plans to complete her four-year associate degree in child education. “Even young people in this era are diligent overall, and I hope to keep pace,” she said. “I enjoy conversing in English with my overseas grandson, but I won’t stop this path just for connection.”
She aims to leverage English public service opportunities abroad, fulfilling her lifelong commitment to learning.
