A 3-meter-wide sinkhole suddenly appeared in an apartment complex in Seoul’s Jungnang-gu district, prompting immediate safety measures from local authorities.
Sinkhole Dimensions and Initial Response
The sinkhole measures 3 meters across and 1.5 meters deep. No injuries occurred, and nearby facilities sustained no damage. Apartment management personnel spotted the crater during a routine full-site patrol on the 10th and quickly cordoned off the area with tape to prevent access and ensure public safety.
Resident Accounts
Parked nearby at the time, resident Ji Hye-cheol, 35, described the event: “The ground suddenly caved in significantly.” He added, “Even if a door frame in a unit breaks, it’s unlikely to affect the entire apartment structure.”
Official Investigation
Jungnang-gu district officials inspected surrounding external roads and confirmed no issues, such as displaced door frames. Related personnel stated that investigators are actively determining the precise cause of the sinkhole.
Recent History
This marks the second such incident in the area. Four months ago, another sinkhole formed about 1 kilometer away, also without injuries.
